Coupons have been a popular topic of conversation in the retail sector. Although the number of mentions of coupons decreased slightly from 1.4 million between June 30 and December 31, 2022, to 1.3 million in the first half of 2023, the number of people discussing the topic increased by 48%, from 119k to 177k individuals. This rise in the number of people discussing the topic suggests that consumers in the retail sector are still highly interested in using coupons and saving money.
Our emotion analysis of the conversations relating to coupons and mentioning the top 10 retail brands (by volume of emotion-categorized mentions) revealed that Etsy saw the highest share of joy mentions relating to coupons. In conversations mentioning coupons, Bath & Body Works and Walgreens saw the highest share of angry mentions compared to their overall emotion-categorized conversation. Sam’s Club led the way with the highest share of disgust mentions, accounting for 68% of their emotion-categorized conversation about coupons.
Here are some tips and hacks that consumers are sharing to save money using coupons:
- Find coupons: Determine where your local coupons can be found. Coupons can pop up in five main places: store coupon walls/bulletin boards, local newspapers, store flyers, coupon apps, and coupon websites. To ensure you’ve covered your bases, sign up for your local newspaper, check your store bulletin board for coupons before your shopping, download coupon apps if you’re app-savvy, join local coupon groups on Facebook, and use coupon websites.
- Match coupons to sales: Check your local store flyers for sales and match them with your coupons to maximize your savings.
- Stack coupons, discounts, points, and cashback rewards: Use multiple coupons, discounts, points, and cashback rewards to save even more money.
- Ask for coupons and price-matching: Don’t be afraid to ask for coupons and price-matching at your local stores.
- Make couponing social: Join local coupon groups on Facebook to keep in the coupon know-how where you live.
- Clip coupons: Clip coupons from your local newspaper and store flyers.
Consumers are excited about saving money using coupons, but the offer is only good when it can benefit the consumer 1.
